Popis
Acanthoscurria geniculata
Acanthoscurria geniculata, commonly known as the Brazilian Whiteknee tarantula, is one of the most popular and highly prized species in the hobby. Hailing from the forests of northern Brazil, it is a giant, beautifully marked spider. It is the perfect „display“ tarantula because it spends very little time hiding in a burrow and prefers to sit out in the open. Its phenomenal feeding response and bold nature make it great for intermediate keepers or well-researched beginners.
Basic parameters:
- Scientific name: Acanthoscurria geniculata
- Origin: South America (Northern Brazil)
- Size: Giant species, reaching a leg span of 1822 cm (78.5 inches).
- Lifespan: Females live 1520 years; males live 12 years post-maturity.
- Temperament: Bold, highly food-motivated, and sometimes skittish.
- Type: Terrestrial (New World, possesses urticating hairs).
and care:
Appearance: The overall body coloration is deep black. The abdomen is covered in long, reddish setae (hairs). Its most striking feature is the bright white bands on its leg joints (knees), which create an eye-catching contrast.
Terrarium:
- Dimensions: A large enclosure of at least 40x30x30 cm (16x12x12 inches) is needed for an adult female.
- Equipment: Provide 810 cm (34 inches) of substrate. They aren’t extensive burrowers as adults, so a simple cork bark hide is usually sufficient. A large, sturdy water dish is a must.
- Ventilation: Good cross-ventilation prevents mold in a damp environment.
Temperature and humidity:
- Temperature: Keep between 2427 °C (7580 °F).
- Humidity: Moderate to high humidity around 7080%. Overflow the water dish to keep part of the substrate moist.
Feeding and diet: They have a legendary appetite and will tackle prey with incredible ferocity. They will gladly eat adult roaches, crickets, and locusts.
Venom and safety:
- Venom: Mild and not medically significant to humans.
- Defense: Their main defense is kicking urticating hairs, which are highly irritating. While they possess massive fangs that would cause mechanical damage, they rarely bite out of defensebites are usually feeding mistakes.
